Background and Aims: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders of the knee. The follow changes lead to more injuries or more complicated medical conditions. Proprioception assessment is one of the ways that can be considered in the evaluation of these people. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare the knee joint proprioception in female volleyball players with patellofemoral pain syndrome and healthy female volleyball players.
Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 30 female athletes (16 PFPS and 14 healthy) with average age 24.33±3.39 year, height 178.72±3.28 cm and 67.76±8.04 kg participated as subjects of this study. Knee joint proprioception was evaluated during two manners (weight bearing (squat) and non-weight bearing (sitting). Kinematics data was recorded by 8 VICON motion analysis cameras system with frequency 1000 HZ. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS software by independent t-test (P≤ 0.05).
Results: Findings showed that in patients group with patella femoral pain syndrome, the variable angular error of the knee joint in weight bearing (Squat) (P = 0.001) and non-weight bearing (sitting) (P = 0.003) was significantly different.
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that knee joint proprioception was weaker in PFPS individuals than in healthy individuals and this condition can lead to more injuries. Therefore, it is suggested that strengthen the proprioception in PFPS should be considered in the treatment and rehabilitation of this injury more accurate tests should be designed to evaluate it.
