Background and Aims: Body percussion improves cognitive, visual-spatial, psycho-motor skills such as body awareness, hand-eye coordination, writing skills, as well as lateralization and social- emotional stimuli and friendly relationships of the students. In addition to educational effects, this method has also led to the development of motor skills, attention, coordination, memory and social interaction in patients with neurological disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of body percussion on motor and social skills of boys with autism.
Materials and Methods: The study is quasi-experimental with an intervention. The research design is a pre-test-post-test with a control group. The statistical population of this study is boys with autism at Tabassum 1 elementary in Mashhad (allocated for autism spectrum disorders), in the academic year of 1399-1400 with an age range of 8 to 14 years with a research population size of 55 students. In this study, the number of participants is 15 in both experimental and control groups. The sampling was done through convenience sampling based on the inclusion criteria.
Results: The mean and standard deviation of age of children participating in the study were 11.2± 0.34 respectively. The significant differences and the findings of the present study suggest that there was a significant difference with the control of the pretest in the subjects of the experimental and control groups in terms of the variable of motor skills (p <0.05). However, there was no significant difference between the subjects in the experimental and control groups in terms of the social skills variable (p> 0.05).
Conclusion: Based on the findings it was concluded that body percussion method, which is one of the types of stimuli that is physically never-ending and is almost easily available, can be employed as a therapeutic modality as it can be effective in terms of student’s motor skills. However, there needs to be further considerations in terms of social skills.
