Background and Aim: Most exercise interventions are used to balance control and reduce the risk of falls. However, the effect of exercise in frontal plane has been less studied. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the effect of 8 week exercises in sagittal and frontal plane on postural sway of elderly men.
Materials and Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, a total of 24 elderly males (60-70 years old) were selected and classified into 2 intervention groups of sagittal and frontal exercises. The intervention groups participated in exercise program for 8 weeks. Center of pressure directional indices of all groups before and after the intervention were evaluated using foot scanner system. Finally, the Mixed ANCOVA test was used for data analysis(P≤0.05).
Results: The results showed a significant decrease in of center of pressure in medial-lateral direction after anterior- posterior and medial-lateral perturbation in frontal group(P<0.05). and The results showed a significant decrease in area of center of pressure after anterior- posterior and medial-lateral perturbation in frontal group(P<0.05).
Conclusion: generally, it seems that the exercises in frontal plane can decrease postural sway in elderly men into sagittal plane exercises.
