Background and Aims: Cerebral palsy is a non-specific and descriptive term that refers to motor dysfunction in early childhood, which is non-progressive and is caused by permanent damage to the developing brain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of balance-resistance training on the levels of safety and physical fitness of children with cerebral palsy.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design with a control group. For this purpose, 30 children (6-10 years) of cerebral palsy were divided into two groups (15 experimental group and 15 control group). Experimental group for 8 weeks, 3 sessions per week and each session for 45 minutes in resistance and balance exercises (resistance exercises for knee flexor muscles, knee extensor and ankle extensor and free balance exercises in two levels of stable support and appropriate level of support for the individual.) Participated. All dependent variables of the research were measured in two rounds of pre-test and post-test. Evaluation of safety levels by determining the serum concentration of salivary immunoglobulin A index, cardiorespiratory endurance by cycle ergometer, flexibility by sit and reach test, muscle strength by digital dynamometer, muscle endurance by sitting test and body composition by It was done by measuring the percentage of body fat. In the statistical section, independent t-test, paired t-test, two-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni were used to analyze the data at a significance level of 0.05. All statistical analyzes were performed using SPSS software version 24.
Results: The results showed that combined resistance-balance training has a significant effect on immune levels (immunoglobulin A), maximum oxygen consumption, flexibility, muscle strength, muscle endurance and body composition of children with cerebral palsy (P≤0.001).
Conclusion: Patients with cerebral palsy are recommended to benefit from these exercises along with medical treatments. The advantage of such adjuvant methods over medical treatments is that there are no side effects.
