Background and Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare of frequency spectrum of ground reaction forces in blind and healthy participants with open and closed eyes during walking.
Materials and Methods: This study was quasi-experimental and laboratory. The statistic samples included 15 blind men with the mean age of 25.22±6.33 years and 15 healthy men with the mean age of 27.22±5.31 years participated in this study and were selected by available sampling method. A foot scan (RS Scan International, Belgium) set was used for measuring frequency spectrum of ground reaction forces during walking. Variables data were recorded at a sampling frequency of 300 Hz. For data analysis paired t-test was used to compare the means within the group and independent t-test to compare the means between groups using SPSS (version 24) statistical software.
Results: The results showed that, the frequency with 99.5% power in vertical direction, Meta1 and heel lateral and heel medial in blind group were greater than healthy group with open eyes and healthy group with closed eyes were greater than with open eyes (P < 0.05). The frequency with 99.5% power (p=0.004) and number of essential harmonics (p=0.003) in vertical direction in blind group 9.84% and 13.51%were respectively less than healthy group with closed eyes. The essential harmonics (p=0.002) in vertical direction in healthy group with closed eyes 20.61% were greater than with open eyes. The frequency with 99.5% power and number of essential harmonics in vertical direction in blind group were less than healthy group with closed eyes (p=0.023).
Conclusion: According to the increase in frequency with 99.5% power and the number of essential harmonics in different areas of the soles of the foot in blind group and healthy group with closed eye on physiotherapists, motion analysis and rehabilitation specialists are recommended to have a special rehabilitation protocol for blind and those who lost their vision due to an accident.
