Background and Aim: Individuals with vision loss are at an increased risk of falls. Due to postural control impairment in blind people, this study aimed to investigate the effect of 8 week aquatic exercises on center of pressure sway in blind women.
Materials and Methods: Thirty blind female were selected and randomly assigned into two intervention group ( age 28.93±2.25 years, height 1.56±6.46 m and weight 58.06±7.91 kg) and control group ( age 29.13±2.23 years , height 1.57±7.48 m and weight 57.93±7.99 kg). The intervention groups participated in an aquatic exercise program for 8 weeks, while the control group did not receive any intervention. center of pressure sway of two groups before and after the intervention were evaluated using the Foot scan. At the end, the ANCOVA test was used for data analysis (P≤0.05).
Results: The results showed a significant decrease in the center of pressure sway scores (Elipse area and Travelled distance), both in the posterior-anterior and anterior-posterior perturbations, after conducting the eight week aquatic exercise progra m in intervention group (p<0.05).
Conclusion: generally, it seems that designing an appropriate exercise protocol can lead to significant changes in center of pressure sway (decrease in the elipse area and travelled distance scores). Therefore, it is recommended to using incorporate aquatic and somatosensory exercises in training programs to reduce the risk of falls in these individuals.
