Background and Aims: Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the country and every year more teenagers and adults are attracted to this sport. However, there is no program to prevent volleyball injuries, which is implemented in accordance with the cultural, economic and social situation of the country and all stages from design to implementation are systematically designed in the country. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to design an intervention program to prevent volleyball sports injuries in a systematic manner using the intervention mapping protocol.
Materials and Methods: The intervention mapping method was used to design the program. Intervention mapping has 6 stages that are used as a map to design, implement and evaluate the intervention based on theoretical, experimental and practical information. These steps are: 1) Needs assessment 2) Determining findings, performance goals and change goals, 3) Selecting intervention methods based on theory and practical applications, 4) Organizing methods and programs as an intervention program, 5) Designing an implementation plan and 6) Developing an evaluation plan. To design an intervention aimed at preventing volleyball injuries among amateur volleyball players, steps 1 to 4 of the intervention mapping were used.
Results: The designed program includes a warm-up program with more than 45 exercises (with different variations and levels for players with different abilities) that should be performed at least two sessions a week before training or competition. This program consists of three levels and each level includes 3 weeks, which are provided to the coaches every week to observe the gradual improvement in the variables of intensity, repetition, and complexity and time of training. The duration of each weekly program is 15 minutes, which is divided into two parts: cardiopulmonary preparation (to increase body temperature and cardiopulmonary preparation) for 4 to 5 minutes and exercises to prevent shoulder, knee and ankle injuries (9 to 10 minutes).
Conclusion: Despite being time consuming, the intervention mapping protocol was a suitable method for designing an intervention to prevent volleyball injuries. The result was a 15-minute warm-up program that includes more than 45 exercises for amateur volleyball players. The feasibility study of the program is underway and the study of its effect is also planned for the coming months.
