Abstract
Background & Objectives:
Cerebral palsy is a common neuromuscular disease with non-progressive symptoms in children. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of modified Hatha-yoga exercises on the Postural Balance of children suffering from spastic diplegic of cerebral palsy.
Methods:
This quasi-experimental study is followed by a pretest, posttest, and follow-up design with a control group. The population of this study included children, aged 7-14 years old, with spastic diplegic of cerebral palsy studying at Exceptional Schools for the Disabled Students (ESDS) in the province of Isfahan in 2019. In order to determine the level of their disability, GMFCS (I to III levels) and E&R (0 to 3 degrees) were applied based on Modified Modified Ashworth scale (MMAS) approach. In this regard, 14 qualified participants were selected by a convenience sampling strategy, and then they were randomly assigned into two groups (i.e., control and experimental groups) equally. The experimental group received an intervention including an eight-week modified Hatha yoga exercise and three sessions a week; while the control group did not receive any intervention. In this study, the change in the center of pressure in participants’ feet sole was recorded for a six-second period considered as their Postural Balance using a scan device at pre-test and post-test. Finally, the data were analyzed using repeated measures analysis and independent t-test significantly at p<0.05(SPSS version 23).
Results:
The results revealed that the intervention significantly improved Postural Balance in the experimental as compared to the control group. Also, the reduction of pressure center fluctuations in anterior-posterior (P = 0.044), internal-external (P = 0.033) and total index (P = 0.038) in the intervention group was significantly higher than the control group (p <0.05).
.
Conclusion:
Modified Hatha Yoga exercises can be considered as a suitable exercise to improve Postural Balance in the children with spastic diplegic CP. However, a definite statement in this regard is subject to further research.
