Introduction & Objective: Inefficiency in the muscles and components acting on the knee joint causes various complications, including the genu varus misalignment. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of eight weeks of running training on a treadmill and ground surface on muscle activities in individuals with genu varus.
Methodology: The present study was a quasi-experimental and laboratory type. Forty-five boys with genu varus were randomly divided into three groups: control, ground training and treadmill training. Running exercises were performed for eight weeks in intervention groups. Electrical activity of selected muscles was recorded by electromyography system. For statistical analysis, mixed analysis of variance with repeated measures were used at a significant level of 0.05.
Results: The results showed that in patients with genu varus, by performing running exercises on the treadmill, the electrical activity of the biceps femoris and gastrocnemius medialis muscles increased significantly during the heel contact phase. The results also showed that the electrical activity of the biceps femoris and vastus latralis muscles in the running exercises group on the ground significantly increased. In the swing phase of running, it was also shown that the electrical activity of the tibialis anterior, gluteus medius and semitendinosus muscles in the running exercise group on the ground significantly increased.
Conclusion: According to the results, it can be concluded that running on a treadmill may have been effective in improving muscle activity and also in preventing the progression of the knee genu varum.
