Background and Aim: Nowadays, Transdermal drug delivery has become a very important method for the delivery of drugs in modern therapies. The epidermis generally and the stratum corneum, in particular, are the main element of controlling and restricting the absorption of chemicals through the skin. Due to the limitations of the presence of stratum corneum in passive drug delivery, the use of enhancers is a good approach to improve drug transferring through the skin. Electroporation is one of the physical methods that can improve drug transport through the skin. It is a type of electrical wave with specific parameters that use high potential waves and can improve the penetration of the drug through structural changes in the skin. This study aims to review the possible improvement of drug penetration n by using the electroporation method as a new approach in the field of physiotherapy and the mechanical changes resulting from the application of this method on the skin.
Materials and Methods: We searched all articles in Pubmed and Science Direct using the following keywords: “transdermal drug delivery”, “physical enhancer” and “electroporation”. Related articles were published between 1970 and 2018.
Conclusion: We conclude based on the current evidence, that the use of electroporation as a physical method is useful for the enhancement of transdermal drug delivery. The reviewed literature suggests that there are advantages to the use of electroporation such as its fast performance, its ability to transfer macromolecules, and its minimal damage to the skin. Results of literature also showed that a combination of this method with other enhancers can improve its enhancement effect. Current research supports the use of electroporation for enhancement of ibuprofen transdermal drug delivery, as discussed above; however, a continuation of current research with consistent and strengthened methodologies will help justify its use and application in clinical practice.
