ABSTRACT
Background and Aims: The quality of life of dialysis patients who are in the final stages of renal failure is affected by various factors. Balance, which is an important factor in physical fitness, plays an important role in physical function and daily activities of people, especially dialysis patients. According to research, exercise therapy and physical activity in these patients reduce the symptoms of urea syndrome, increase dialysis adequacy and reduce mortality in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the improvement of balance and quality of life of dialysis patients after 8 weeks of combined training.
Materials and Methods: 24 dialysis patients with an age range of 40 to 60 years in Urmia city were selected voluntarily and randomly divided into two groups of control (n = 12) and exercise (n = 12). Quality of life, static and dynamic balance before and after 8 weeks of selected combined training (resistance-aerobic) were evaluated. Quality of life was measured by a 26-item questionnaire (26-WHOQOL) in four areas (physical health, psychological health, social and environmental relationships). Life satisfaction was measured using the SWLS scale and static and dynamic balance was also measured using the Prokin 212N device twice before and after the combination exercises. The control group resumed their normal lives during this period without any intervention.
Results: Studies conducted between the two groups showed that combined exercise significantly improved the variables of balance (static equilibrium: p = 0.001 and dynamic equilibrium: p = 0.001) and quality of life (physical domain: p = 0.001, psychological domain: p = 0.001, social domain: p = 0.010 and environmental domain: p = 0.001) in the exercise group compared to the control group. In addition, a significant difference was observed in the static and dynamic balance of the exercise group after combined exercises (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: The results showed that the exercises used were effective in increasing balance and quality of life. Exercise is a window of hope that brings these patients closer to pre-disease life. Therefore, it may be possible to get better results from the selected combination exercises used in this study to improve the balance and quality of life of dialysis patients.
