Background and Aim: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is one of the structural deviations of the spine as an unknown cuase that affects 0.47-5.2% of the population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect and durability of the effect of integrative corrective exercises on the severity of scoliosis in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS).
Materials and Methods: This study was a semi-experimental study with control group and having pretest- posttest design. Thirty-two girls (age 13.97 ± 2.25 years, height 153.97 ± 7.978 cm, weight 52.03 ± 6.23 kg) with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and C-shaped thoracic frontal plane deviation entered the study. The participants were randomly divided into the experimental (integrative corrective exercises) and control groups.
The Cobb angle radiography was used to collect data. All measurements were taken before the corrective exercise, immediately after 12 weeks of exercise and after that 12 weeks of follow-up.
Multivariate analysis of variance was used for repetitive data to examine intra-group different and analysis of covariance used for inter-group different.
Results: The results of mean cobb angle at three times of pre-test, post-test and follow-up in the control group were 15.8, 16.60 and 16.85, respectively, and in the experimental group were 16.04, 11.26 and 11.01, respectively, indicating a significant improvement in the cobb angle (P <0.05) in the intervention group compared to the control group over time and in the experimental group, this improvement maintened after 12 weeks of follow-up.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the study, can be concluded that integrated corrective exercise by using selected exercises of common methods can reduce the degree of Cobb angle in adolescence idiopathic scoliosis and hence the use of this treatment program is recommended for adolescents.
